One is mine, one is lost
Just last year I wove two woolen laces for friends so that they could sew historical clothes on themselves.
The first one has nicely matched colors, because I didn't choose them 😉 Gray with red looks great. The pattern is my idea – a simple pattern, but I think it's quite charming. The width of the selvedge is 1.7 cm, the length is 7.7 m.
The second selvedge is made of carded wool, so it came out quite stiff. This is one of the few selvedges that I have copied, and I try not to copy other people's ideas. However, I have always dreamed of stealing some of my ancestors' creativity and making reconstructions based on specific archaeological finds. The original is a brooched tablet tape no. B8 from grave 977 in Birka. As usual, I used a bard and a picking technique, as well as a certain amount of guessing what the pattern looked like, due to some gaps in the fabric and the fact that I did not find a ready-made pattern for it. The width of the resulting selvedge is 2.4 cm, and the length is 7.25 m.
Please visit again, I will write more posts soon.
The selvedges are very pretty, I'm just starting out with them, hence my question: how do I make 7 meters of selvedge so that it doesn't get tangled and can be combed well?
I will soon publish a step-by-step instruction on weaving selvedges from scratch. I think that doubts about tangling threads will also disappear 🙂
